A local politician’s garden has been robbed of two valuable jackfruits, and a determined young police officer must solve the case. Despite the seemingly ridiculous plot, the movie doesn’t rely solely on satire. The protagonist even comments on the situation’s absurdity, saying, “This case hardly seems legitimate. But, before long, people will report missing carrots and turnips.”
The situation escalates when the local news media picks up the story, and the politician, played by Vijay Raaz, agrees to an interview. During the interview, he expresses concern about the public’s safety if even politicians’ homes can be robbed. The police chief promises to provide Malhotra’s character with all necessary resources, including additional workforce and weapons. In a moment of inspiration, she buys two jackfruits from the grocers and presents them as evidence. Still, the politician’s family sees through the ruse and realizes that the stolen jackfruits are not among them.

Kathal is the second collaboration for Sanya, who also starred in Pagglait with Guneet Monga. The actress is also set to star in Sam Bahadur and Mrs., a remake of the Malayalam film The Great Indian Kitchen.
In Kathal, Sanya will play the role of Field Marshall Sam Manekshaw’s wife, alongside lead actor Vicky Kaushal and Fatima Sana Shaikh, who will portray the role of Indira Gandhi.
Sanya Malhotra has taken on the lead role in her third Netflix film. She has previously starred in Pagglait, a dark comedy, and Meenakshi Sundereshwar, a romantic drama. In addition, Malhotra gained recognition for her role in the successful sports drama Dangal in 2016 and has received critical acclaim for her performances in Pataakha, a political satire by Vishal Bhardwaj, and Photograph, directed by Ritesh Batra.
It’s worth noting that Malhotra is carving out a niche for herself by starring in unconventional genre films, which is rare for actors of her age in Bollywood.
